The general theme of the conference is “Anamnesis, Diagnosis, Therapy, Controls”, which emphasizes the importance of all steps of a restoration process in order to obtain a thorough understanding of the structural behavior of built cultural heritage. Research papers are invited for oral and poster presentation concerning following topics:

  1. Traditional and innovative construction materials and techniques

  2. Non-destructive testing, inspection and structural monitoring

  3. Adobe and vernacular constructions

  4. Conservation of the 20th century architectural heritage

  5. Structural assessment and intervention of archaeological sites

  6. Theory and practice of conservation

  7. Repair and strengthening techniques

  8. Analytical and numerical approaches

  9. In-situ and laboratory experimental results

  10. Seismic behavior and retrofitting

  11. Rehabilitation, re-use and valorization of cultural heritage buildings

  12. Case studies

Specific Themes

In view of the 10th anniversary edition of the SAHC meetings and the 40th anniversary of the Raymond Lemaire International Centre for Conservation (RLICC, established by Professor Raymond Lemaire (†1997) in 1976, at the initiative of ICOMOS), and in view of addressing themes relevant to the UNESCO-chair on Preventive Conservation, Monitoring and Maintenance of Monuments and Sites (precomos.org) chaired by RLICC, the conference organization also invites research and review papers on 6 specific themes.

1.     Innovation and heritage

How does the development of innovative materials and techniques influence the restoration process? Which alterations have materials and techniques, developed at the end of the 20th century undergone? Have we learned from past successes and failures?

2.     Preventive conservation
Thematic keynote speech: prof. Stefano Della Torre (Polimi, Italy)
How is preventive conservation understood in this field? What is the role and contribution of monitoring and quality management in preventive conservation? How effective is preventive conservation in dealing with resolving risks related to structural safety in the field of built heritage?

3.     Computational strategies
Thematic keynote speech: prof. Jan G. Rots (TU Delft, The Netherlands)
Which are advantages and disadvantages of computational strategies for heritage structures?  How do we attune the simplifications within finite element modelling to the multi-scale complexity of heritage structures? Has our approach changed in the past 20 years?

4.     Sustainable strengthening of masonry with composites
Thematic keynote speech: prof. Gianmarco De Felice (UNIRoma3 and Rilem TC CSM, Italy)
How and why are novel developed composite materials adopted in restoration practice? What is the compatibility and durability of different composite-based strengthening systems, applied on historic masonry? How can we ascertain and monitor long-term efficiency of the strengthening intervention?

5.     Values and sustainability

Which is the impact of restoration and conservation practice on economy, government and society? How do we integrate heritage values, authenticity and sustainability into conservation and restoration practice?

6.     Subsoil interaction
Thematic keynote speech: prof. Matthew Dejong (University of Cambridge, UK)
How do anthropogenic ground movements (caused by tunneling, excavation, gas exploitation, mining, etc.) affect the structural integrity of built cultural heritage? How can we predict, model, prevent, monitor or retrofit damage?
